On May 31, 2024, Vitali Stefanski was charged with the second-degree murder of his ex-wife, Tatjana Stefanski, in a case that has gripped the community in Lumby.
The investigation began on April 13, 2024, when Tatjana Stefanski was reported missing from her home in Lumby. The next day, April 14, her body was discovered in a rural area. Authorities quickly arrested a man in the vicinity who was believed to be connected to her death. However, he was released from police custody with conditions shortly after.
In the following weeks, the BC RCMP Southeast District Major Crime Unit (SED MCU) worked diligently to gather evidence, and their efforts have culminated in a submission to Crown Counsel, seeking charge approval for murder. The breakthrough came on May 31, when charges were officially laid against Vitali Stefanski.
“Although this investigation to date has had its many challenges, the recent charges brought against Stefanski are the result of the tireless investigative work done by the members of the SED MCU and Vernon RCMP Detachment,” said Staff Sergeant Jason Smart, NCO i/c BC RCMP SED MCU.
Following the charges, Vitali Stefanski was arrested and is in custody, awaiting his court appearance.
