Whistler Blackcomb Chief Operating Officer Belinda Trembath recently appeared before the Whistler council at the April 9 regular council meeting to give a rundown of the season. Trembath shared what she learned from her first winter season with Whistler Blackcomb and highlighted some of the critical items coming up for spring and summer.

Trembath started by reflecting on her inaugural winter season with Whistler Blackcomb. Despite initial challenges with snowfall, she described the season as remarkable, with a recent April powder day marking a highlight. She emphasized the numerous learnings for herself and the team throughout the season.

Key highlights of the season included the opening of the Fitzsimons chair in December, the collaboration with the Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre (SLCC) to introduce culinary offerings like salmon chowder with Bannock at Creekside’s Ravens Nest, hosting the Invictus Games test event in February, and a successful Pride Week celebration. Additionally, the return of the Whistler Blackcomb Foundation gala to the Roundhouse was noted as a significant event.

Trembath highlighted the resort’s focus on communication, ensuring visitors were informed about daily operations, parking updates, snow conditions, and safety measures following weather events. The introduction of the Gondola Galleries project, featuring artwork by indigenous artists Levi Nelson and Chief Janice George, was also mentioned as a recent initiative.

Trembath outlined plans to transition from winter to spring and summer operations. While both Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains are set to operate until April 14, Whistler Blackcomb will close for spring maintenance from April 15. Construction will commence on the Jersey Cream Express, a project aimed at upgrading the existing quad chairlift to a six-passenger high-speed chairlift in preparation for the winter of 2025.

The Whistler Mountain Bike Park will open on May 17, coinciding with the 25th anniversary of the park. Trembath expressed excitement for the opening of the Fitzsimons Express for the bike park, which will increase uphill capacity and enhance access to popular biking trails. She also announced that the Peak to Peak gondola will undergo spring maintenance and reopen for sightseeing on June 15. She also noted upcoming summer activities, including the popular mountaintop feasts at the Roundhouse scheduled for late June onwards.

In addition to outlining plans for the upcoming seasons, Trembath highlighted the resort’s commitment to sustainability, including waste reduction initiatives and efforts to achieve zero waste to landfill by 2030.
